PaintingsPaintings conservation is WACC’s oldest and largest department. The paintings department offers services ranging from simple cleaning to surface stabilization to full restoration of damaged artworks. Conservators perform condition assessments of individual paintings or entire collections, information which can be used for grant applications. A proposal outlining specific treatment needs, procedures and materials, and estimated cost is provided. Staff conservators are skilled in treating a full range of painting materials and techniques, including early egg tempera, 17th- through 20th-century oils and acrylics on panel and canvas, wall murals, theatrical stage sets, reverse painted glass, and the diverse challenges of contemporary works. On older artworks, replacing aged linings and correcting discolored surfaces are a large part of the work. Typical cosmetic work includes various types and degrees of cleaning and inpainting, all determined by what is safe and appropriate to the specific artist and painting. Conservators consult closely with curators and collectors on special challenges, augmenting their working experience with radiography, infrared reflectography and scientific analysis for in-depth study. The paintings lab regularly interfaces with other WACC departments for joint projects such as oil paint on paper, wood panel stabilization and pigment identification.
