WAAC Object Services

The Objects Conservation Department offers services for a broad scope of cultural and historic items. The range of objects treated in the Objects Department ranges from stone carvings, bronze sculpture and ivory statuary to a leg brace worn by baseball star Cal Ripkin and a golf club owned by Katherine Hepburn. Conservators perform condition assessment, documentation and treatments on numerous artifacts, including:

  • indoor and outdoor sculpture
  • decorative arts
  • textiles
  • archeological, ethnographic and historic artifacts
  • contemporary objects
  • materials treated include wood and plant matter, leather, bone, ivory, plastics, stone, ceramic, glass and plaster

The Objects Department also provides services related to collections care. Conservators design and fabricate custom mounts for artifacts; perform collections and facilities surveys, including outdoor sculpture collections; and provide consultations and services related to collections storage and moves. The department conducts information and training workshops on issues of importance to institutions and private owners alike, such as safe care and handling practices for artworks; materials and methods of packing, storage, display and transportation; and outdoor sculpture preservation plans and annual maintenance.
