OBJECTS CONSERVATOR DEPARTMENT HEAD
The Williamstown Art Conservation Center seeks a qualified conservator to head the Objects Department in its new facility designed by the renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando, on the campus of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
Duties of this full-time position include:
- Examination, treatment, and documentation of a wide range of three-dimensional materials
- Written and digital documentation of conservation projects
- Collections assessments and conservation planning
- Consultation and workshops
- Travel for site projects, including collections surveys, outdoor sculpture and individual treatments
- Supervision of department conservators, interns and technicians
- Contracting with specialists in metalworking, mount making, and other disciplines
A Masters degree in conservation and eight years of post-graduate objects conservation experience are required. Supervisory and/or regional lab experience is preferred. Applicants must demonstrate ability in the treatment of decorative arts, sculpture, historic artifacts, and contemporary art, including both organic and inorganic materials. The physical ability to work outdoors on large sculptures is required. Collaboration on projects with other departments (paintings, paper, and furniture) is common, and the applicant must have good communication and team skills. The presence of an analytical department on site offers exceptional opportunities for materials research.
The Williamstown Center is a non-profit regional laboratory in operation since 1977. We currently serve over 50 member collections in the northeast and south, as well as a wide variety of nonmember nonprofit, corporate and private collections.

Conservator of Paper/Photographic Materials
Williamstown Art Conservation Center (WACC) seeks a Paper/Photograph Conservator within a large lab shared by two paper conservators. While the majority of the work performed at WACC is for collections of fine art and historic works on paper, the WACC members also hold photographs and art incorporating photography. Preference will be given to a candidate who has experience with current photograph conservation techniques.
The Center is housed in a newly constructed conservation facility designed by Tadeo Ando located on the campus of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown Massachusetts. WACC is a regional center serving institutional members and private clients in the Northeast. In addition to paper, WACC has departments for furniture, paintings, objects and analytical services.
The position requires occasional travel for on-site condition assessments and consultation. There will be opportunities for preparing and conducting workshops, teaching graduate students and supervising interns.
The successful candidate should be a graduate of a recognized conservation training program, or have equivalent experience. The candidate must demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of examination, treatment, and collections management for a wide range of materials.
Title and salary will be commensurate with experience. WACC offers excellent benefits plus an annual research stipend of $1000 and five research days for professional development.
